Welcome

The Scottish Physical Activity Research Collaboration (SPARColl) is based at the University of Strathclyde. The collaboration is funded by the Scottish Government until March 2012 and managed by NHS Health Scotland. The focus of the SPARColl work plan is on walking. Further information on SPARColl research is available in the research section of this site. A major focus of SPARColl work plan is a community walking intervention, Walking for Wellbeing in the West.

If you would like to contact the collaboration, please contact the SPARColl project co-ordinator, Chloe McAdam.

New Physical Activity Guidelines in the UK

For the first time the Chief Medical Officers of all UK countries have produced a report presenting new physical activity guidelines covering early years; children and young people; adults; and older adults.

These guidelines will help to ensure consistent messaging across the four countries. The report also represents the first time guidelines have been produced in the UK for early years (under fives) as well as sedentary behaviour, for which there is now evidence that this is an independent risk factor for ill health.

You can find the scientifically infomed guidelines and fact sheets on the Department of Health Website

Five year review report of 'lets make Scotland more active'

In 2008, a review group carried out a full review of how 'lets make Scotland more active' had been implemented in the last five years. The report can be viewed here.

SPARColl was asked to provide evidence concerning recommendations of the amount and type of physical activity needed for health gain. This evidence informed the full strategy review. This report includes a summary of the evidence considered.
