West End Walkers 65 (WEW 65 )

WEW 65 is a study aiming to test the feasibility of a pedometer-based walking programme in inactive Scottish adults aged 65 years and over. The walking programme is given in combination with a physical activity consultation in a primary care setting.

WEW 65 aims to help community dwelling older adults aged over 65 years achieve and sustain the physical activity recommendation of 30 minutes of activity at least 5 days of the week. The study will involve 46 inactive men and women recruited from a GP surgery in the West End of Glasgow. These individuals will be divided into an intervention group and a waiting list control group.

WEW 65 will provide evaluative information on recruitment and retention to the study, the feasibility of the intervention and outcome measures that could be useful in designing a definitive randomised controlled trial.

In addition, walking behaviour will be assessed using pedometer step counts (NL-1000 pedometer) and accelerometer activity counts (ActivPAL Accelerometer). Finally, a number of psychological measures (including mood, quality of life, stage of change and loneliness) and qualitative data will be obtained.

West End Walkers 65 is funded jointly by the Chief Scientist Office (grant no: CZH/4/457) and the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Research and Development Office (project ref: WN08CH356).
